Available in Aluminum and Lexan versions.
The Lexan or Aluminum Crystal Card is designed to measure the size and quality of snow. The card has both 1 mm and 3 mm grids with a snow grain classification key to differentiate types of snow crystals in deep snowpack.
The backside of the card has different slope scales for contour maps as well
as a 10 cm ruler.

1. Insert the crystal card into the snow so that the temperature of the card matches that of the snow pack and snow crystals will not melt when you put them on the card for examination. The card should be in the snow for approximately 30 seconds or until the card is thoroughly cooled.
2. Once the card is completely cooled, remove it from the snow pack and place a few snow crystals on the card for examination. With your magnifying loupe, examine the crystals for size or for the snowclassification they fall under; use the key on the front of the card. Repeat these steps for the different layers of the snowpack.
3. Record your observations in your AIARE Field Book and use your knowledge attained in avalanche education courses to determine whether the snowpack is safe or not.
