second filter is contaminated or soiled. And if a
filter is contaminated or soiled, you can be sure
that there are also problems with the water quality.

You know the problem: although you have carried
out all necessary treatment steps correctly and
you have also backwashed your filter weekly, the
water turns turbid or green and the consumption of the disinfectant increases significantly.
The most common reasons are
> contaminated or
> heavily dirty filter.
In swimming pool filters there are ideal conditions for bacteria to grow. It is always warm, wet and
humid and organic material as well as micro organisms
are constantly floated into the filter. The
result is unsatisfactory water quality and a loss
of the disinfectant performance of up to 20 %.
Usually, your filter should be completely clean
after the backwash. Turbid water, higher consumption
of disinfectant and strong chlorine smell,
however, are clear indications that there is something
wrong with the filter. The usual reasons are
dirty and/or contaminated filters. The “weak” point
can be the backwash itself, because it is not
strong enough. The dirt in the filter will therefore
not be removed completely, but remains there.
Common filter cleaners delete inorganic dirt only
(mainly calcium deposits), whereas organic dirt
(for instance remains of skin, sweat etc.) and bacteria
stay in the filter and are often the reason for
a bad water quality.
BAYROL FilterShock is completely new and is completely
different to any available filter cleaner:
FilterShock disinfects sand filter systems completely
and reliably and oxidises the debris that remains
in the filter even when backwashing on
a regular basis. The use of FilterShock thus creates
the prerequisites of clean water.
FilterShock is a special, pH neutral granular material
for the filter disinfection formulated from
a chorine base. The granules are placed on the
filter sand surface and are thus effective exactly
where necessary and where the debris is located.
The slow dissolving granular material produces
a 30-60 minute shock treatment of the filter.
FilterShock works in two ways: Firstly it oxidises
the debris by the so called “cold burning” method
to make it completely free of any organic material.
Secondly the chlorine in FilterShock ensures a
strong disinfection, through which bacteria and other organisms are killed reliably.
The sand filter is completely clean and bacteria free and the disinfectant is used at an optimum.
Something particular about FilterShock is the
fact that is can be used with all important
treatment programmes, i. e. with chlorine,
bromine and BAYROL active oxygen. The
chlorine in FilterShock is effective within the
filter only. In presence of liquid oxygen (for
example BayroSoft or Softswim) there is no
way for chlorine to get into the pool – the
water still remains 100% chlorine free.
The dosing of FilterShock is very easy: Firstly
thoroughly backwash the filter. Then check
and if necessary adjust the pH value between
7.0 and 7.4. FilterShock is dosed with the
circulation pump running by rapidly sprinkling it directly into the skimmer. Then allow the
circulation pump to run for 12 hours. For overflow
pools, the dosing is done into the strainer basket
of the circulation pump.
Dosage quantities:
For a pool up to a size of 30 m3: 0.5 kg
For a pool of more than 30 m3: 1 kg.

In what is called volume filtering the entire filter
volume acts as a filtering surface. Thanks to this
method many contaminants are removed from
the water and caught in the filter. The contaminants
penetrate more or less deeper in the filter’s
sand and remain there until the next backwash.
In the meantime there is a proliferation of bacteria.
If the backwashing is not performed at adequate
intervals or if the backwashing is not carried
out thoroughly, it is very likely that there are going
to be problems with the quality of the water.
Therefore, it is highly recommended to perform
the backwashing once a week. The backwash process
is finished when the backwash water runs
perfectly clear. You can look through the sight
glass during the backwashing to ascertain when
the water is clean. A backwash operation should
last at least 3 minutes. If the backwash water is
always clear it means that the backwashing is not
performed properly. In this case it is very likely
that the soiling and bacteria has remained in the
filter! If there is no way to improve the backwashing,
for instance by installing a more powerful
pump, the regular use of FilterShock will be useful.
