Hot Tub Chemicals Troubleshooting Guide

Often, many water and surface problems can be handled by the individual spa owner. The information below provides solutions to some common hot tub issues. Always make sure the water is properly balanced prior to any addition of corrective hot tub chemicals.
 
Problem Description Cause Solution / Suggested Products
Cloudy Water Hazy or extremely cloudy water.Difficulty seeing the bottom of the spa. Low chlorine levels or high chloromines. Shock Treatment
Poor water balance. Balance pH.
Poor filtration and circulation. Clean or replace filter. Hot Tub Filter Cleaners / Filter Cartridges.
Particulate matter. Try using Pool Clarifiers and Flocculant regularly.

Green Water Murky, green waterPossibly some algae growth Low chlorine levels or poor maintenance. Super chlorination (10 ppm) overnight or completely empty and refill.
High pH. Lower pH levels then superchlorinate.
Poor circulation. Replace Filter

Poor maintenance More regular brushing.Clean the filter.

Foamy Water Rough, black spots on the bottom of the pool brush off with effort. Low chlorine levels or poor maintenance. Shock Treatment, then add Algicide.
Odour and eye irritation Pool has a sharp, irritating odour. Chloramines, Too little or no free chlorine. Shock Treatment,

Scale build-up Sandpaper-like buildup on the surface. Improper water balance - high TA (total alkalinity)pH and/or CH (calcium hardness). Balance pHUse a Hardness & Stain & Scale Adjusters

Foaming Bubbles on the pool surface. Excessive algaecide, detergents and soap from bathers, excessive clarifier. Shock Treatment,alter clarifier or Aagicide use.

Green Hair Blonde hair turns green after swimming. Over-dosing of copper-based algicides with low pH. Change to a non copper algicide, adjust pH

No Apparent Chlorine Reading. I'm testing my pool and chlorine levels don't show, even though I have been putting in a lot of chlorine. If there are no other indicators such as the presence of algae or cloudy water it is highly likely that there is too much chlorine present. See also:

Cloudy Water

Description
Hazy or extremely cloudy water. Difficulty seeing the bottom of the spa. Cause & Solutions- Low sanitiser levels.
Super shock your hot tub with chlorine(10 ppm) or bromine.- High Chloromines (chlorine that has combined with contaminants and subsequently odes not sanitise effectively).
