Hot Tub Seal Replacement

Please remember that water and electricity are a deadly combination and do not mix. Use any of the information contained herein AT YOUR OWN RISK.

We will not be held liable for any injuries that may result from the troubleshooting advice or installation of any electrical components in your hot tub spa unit.

There are 2 main types of seal replacements in the UK - 60% of the time it will be a Waterway wet end where the seal sits in the impellor & the spring assembly sits in the wet end or it may be the Aquaflo wet end where the ceramic seal sits in the wet end and the spring assembly sits on the impellor - read through and follow the instructions that relate to your type of seal mount, it may be a different manufacturer than these two but the fundamentals will be the same. Be careful not to mix up Waterway and Aquaflo replacement procedures.

If your hot tub is equipped with 2 pumps, it is always worth considering replacing both pump seals at this time to avoid the possibility of repeating this procedure in the near future. This information depicts a USA motor being used for demonstration, however, the procedure applies also to European / Chinese motors, (a slight variation in work might apply)

How to replace a Waterway Pump Seal

Before you begin:

Turn the power off at the RCD, remove the access door to the equipment area, unplug the motor at the electrical control panel, close the gate valves (if your spa has them, otherwise you will have to drain the spa), next loosen the 2 pump unions, loosen any mounting bolts and remove the pump assembly from the equipment box.

1. Tools required are a large flathead screwdriver, a Philips head screwdriver, and a 1/4" socket.

2. On USA pumps loosen the back casing screw and remove the shroud to get access to the spindle. No need for European / Chinese Pumps (photo 2) where there's no need to loose bots as spindle is accessible already at the rear.

3. Carefully loosen the 4 thru-bolts.

4. Pull the bolts back a few inches, but there is no need to fully remove them.

5. Remove the 8 screws on the wet end front face.

6. Remove the front plate. it may require a tap with a hammer and a suitable leverage point.

7. Grab the impeller with one hand. Use the flathead screwdriver to hold the large socket at the other end of the motor. It takes a bit of patience, but you should be able to stop the shaft from turning and loosen the impeller by hand. Do not loosen the socket, just the impeller.

8. Remove the impeller and backplate from the shaft.

9. Separate the impeller from the backplate. make a note where the top hat or wear ring is positioned for re-assembly.

10. Using a flathead screwdriver, carefully pry the old seal out of the impeller seat.

11. Slightly lubricate the shaft and rubber seal with pump lube or a mild liquid detergent from the kitchen, and install the new assembly as shown. Try to avoid touching the white surface. Use a cloth if need be.

12. Using the screwdriver again, push the spring assembly out of the backplate.

13. Wipe the spring assembly seat with a clean rag to remove all dirt and debris.

14. Slightly lubricate the spring body with pump lube or a mild liquid detergent from the kitchen

15. Push the spring assembly firmly back into its seat. Try to avoid touching the smooth surface with your fingers by using a cloth.

16. Wipe the white ceramic disc seat and face of the spring assembly with a clean rag, again to remove any fingerprints or other oils.

17. Remove the large O-Ring, clean its seat, lubricate the ring, and replace it. Use a new O-Ring if the old one shows any sign of wear.

18. Reinstall the thru-bolts and backplate.

19. Thread the impeller assembly onto the shaft until it begins to spin. Use the screwdriver again to stop the shaft from spinning, and hand tighten the impeller.

20. Re-attach the front plate.

21. Reinstall the shroud.

Reinstall the pump, open the check valves if your spa has them, or refill the spa. Turn the power on at the RCD.

Remember that pumps should only run with water in the spa or there is a risk of overheating the motor.

Pump seals may take time to seat themselves, so don't be surprised if there is a small amount of dripping water for about a day.

Follow the above procedure, but account for the seal & spring assembly placement differences.

How to replace an Aqua-Flo Pump Seal

1. The seal has 2 parts. a- White/Rubber part goes in the recess on the back of the Wet end. Whilst the silver Spring slides onto the shaft of the Impeller.

2. Press part a of the seal into the recess of the black Wet end firmly to accomplish a good seal.

3. Slide the spring assembly onto the shaft of the impeller. Black ring facing up and make sure the part is slid all the way on the impeller shaft.

4. Place Impeller back in Wet end Housing. Install Wet end back onto Motor.

That's it, all done. Congrats
