There are so many different types of coping stones on the market, making it hard to decide which ones are suitable for your pool and it really becomes quite confusing. In this guide, we break down each type of coping stone and summarise the different options available to you.
Coping stones can be made from several types of material depending on size, price and usage of the pool:Composite (Concrete Mix) StoneMarbleLimestoneTravetine Honed and FilledGraniteTextured SandstoneNatural Riven SandstoneThe list is endless? The price is dependent on the quality, finish and desirability of the material that the coping stone is made from, ranging from £20.00 for Composite all the way up to £80.00 for Granite. Most coping stones are suitable for both indoor and outdoor pools.
Sizing is key to making your coping stones look flush around your poolside, you don't want them overhanging too much... There are 4 main depths of coping stones:9 inches12 inches300/305mm 400mmMost straight stones come in 600mm/24inch lengths. Curved stones can however vary. The thickness of coping stones is normally between 30mm and 40mm.Coping stones can also be tapered (20mm external thickness to 40mm internal thickness). Choosing the depth of the stone is normally based on the size of your pool....for larger commercial pools normally 12" and smaller domestic pools 9".
The next factor to decide is the finish on the internal/external edges of the coping stone. The different options available are listed below:Straight Cut - Both edges are Straight and to a point.
Buff Bull Nosed - One edge is straight cut and the other edge is curved (Normally internal edge is curved).
Buff Ribbed - Lines running through the stone for added detail.
The finish of the stone is personal choice and normally based on the design of the pool.
Please note all our coping stones are labelled using names from the diagram above. So to summarise...when choosing coping stones for your pool you need to consider 3 factors:Material, size and design of the stone. We hope this breakdown helped you to understand coping stones in a little more depth.
