Skimmer Overview

A skimmer's job is to catch large debris such as floating leaves, twigs and insects, and also preserve a clean pool surface.

The area of any swimming pool that requires the most filtration is the top layer (the first 20 cms, the bit you swim through). Skimmers do this by moving the top layer through the filter at a greater rate than the lower level suctions to ensure that this area is in general passed through the filter more times ensuring clean safe water whilst reducing turbidity and improving the circulation of the sanitiser.

Therefore making an informed decision on a pool skimmer will help maintain your pool far easier.

Above ground or In-ground?

Above ground

If you have an above-ground pool then determine the skimmer installation location. If you are replacing an existing skimmer, we recommend as long as the original has given you good service then replace it like for like so look at our portfolio and attempt to use the exact model that came with your pool.

If no longer available we recommend replacing it with a skimmer with a larger mouth. You will then need to cut the skimmer wall to fit it properly, when done right it will secure the installation.

Never use a smaller skimmer than the original skimmer as there is no way to secure it safely into the wall section.

When planning a new installation, check the dimensions of the product and the skimmer wall panel once the product has arrived. We always recommend a wide-mouth skimmer.

In-ground

Now, if you have an in-ground skimmer, we also need to determine what type of in-ground pool you have: Liner (vinyl), Fibreglass (prefabricated) or concrete.

The difference between liner /fibreglass and concrete skimmers is the face. Liner/fibreglass skimmers' faces have gaskets acting as a seal between the face plate and the liner or shell of the pool.

A concrete skimmer requires no gasket.

The liner/fibreglass skimmer also contains a faceplate that must be screwed into place, to ensure a proper seal of the liner and gasket.

The standard for pool piping is either 1.5" or 2" PVC. We do not recommend mixing and matching pipe sizes as we want to ensure a proper flow through your system. Ensure your system pipe size corresponds to the skimmer pipe size.

You can install multiple skimmers, thus eliminating potential debris settling blind spots in the corner where the skimmer is potentially out of reach.

We offer skimmers in a variety of finishes, typically white or stainless, other colours are available upon request

The length of the opening from the skimmer's front face to the skimmer body that houses the basket is known as its throat. The majority of skimmers have a standard length throat but we also offer extended throat options. The reason for an extended throat is that the skimmer has to be set further back from the edge of the pool than a standard installation.

We offer Skimmer Socks, simply slip it onto the inside of your skimmer basket. They are a great way to catch small debris, hair and even pollen, reducing the need to clean skimmer baskets, and making pool maintenance easier. Using Skimmer Socks also helps protect the pump and all the equipment.
