Often, many water and surface problems can be handled by the individual pool owner. The information below provides solutions to some common pool issues. Always make sure the water is properly balanced prior to any addition of corrective swimming pool chemicals.

Problem Description Cause Solution / Suggested Products
Cloudy Water Hazy or extremely cloudy water.
Difficulty seeing the pool bottom.
Low chlorine levels or high chloromines. Shock Treatment
Poor water balance. Balance pH - If levels too high add pH Minus or pH Increasers if levels too low.
Poor filtration and circulation. Check the pumps and equipment. Clean filter.
Particulate matter. Try using Pool Clarifiers and Flocculant regularly.

Green Algae Murky, green water

Possibly some growth
Low chlorine levels or poor maintenance. Shock Treatment, then add Algicide.
High pH. Lower pH levels then as above.
Poor circulation. Check the pumps and equipment. Clean filter.
Phosphate levels too high. Fi-Clor Pool Phosphate Remover if Phosphate levels too high.

Black Algae Rough, black spots on the bottom of the pool that brushes off with effort. Low chlorine levels or poor maintenance. Shock Treatment, then add Algicide.
Poor maintenance More regular brushing.

Clean the filter.
High pH. Lower pH levels then as above.
Poor circulation Check the pumps and equipment. Clean filter.

Green Hair Blonde hair turns green after swimming. Over-dosing of copper-based algicides with low pH. Change to a non-copper algicide, adjust pH

No Apparent Chlorine Reading. I'm testing my pool and chlorine levels don't show, even though I have been putting in a lot of chlorine. If there are no other indicators such as the presence of algae or cloudy water it is highly likely that there is too much chlorine present.
