Hot Tub Topside Control Troubleshooting

A Topside Control Panel activates functions at the touch of a button. Each function will echo from the circuit board to the LCD/LED in a corresponding manner. The panel will also display diagnostic messages which enable you to easily troubleshoot the system.

The first thing is to do a:

Topside Preliminary Panel Check:

  • If the problem is not obvious, look on the top-side control panel for diagnostic messages. If no messages are seen, run through all spa functions and note any inconsistent operation.
  • If diagnostic messages appear on the topside control panel, see error codes
  • Once you have determined that proper voltage is running through the circuit board and transformer, continue to the topside control panel. A panel that is not functioning properly may include the following symptoms: low voltage such as missing or scrambled segments, missing icons on the LCD, non-functional LEDs, or non-functional buttons. If any of these symptoms are present, perform the following:
  • Turn the power off and unplug the panel from the circuit board.
  • If you have an intermittent fault then it may be moisture at the PCB connection, dry it out, and this may easily sort the problem. Repair of electronic top sides is usually accomplished by replacement. There are no serviceable parts inside the potting that seals the unit.
  • If you still see symptoms of low voltage, such as a sluggish, blank or partially blank panel, or if the display or the LED do not function at all, turn the power off and replace the circuit board.

My touchpad is blank?

If so, check power is turned on at the PowerPoint, the isolation switch (if the spa is hardwired), and then the main switchboard to your house with R.C.D (Residual Current Device). If all are turned on and still no display on the touchpad, is the spa working as normal with everything going but the display is still not there? Then you have a touchpad or connection problem, or possible software or circuitry issue. Find the topside connection to the PCB board and check for corrosion or moisture, if corroded then clean, if moisture is evident then dry out, this may solve the problem.

The touchpad is displaying a weird message or has flashing dots or is flashing different colours?

Your touchpad is probably trying to tell you something! Check your owners manual, under touchpad error codes or have a look here: see error codes

The touchpad is unreadable or digits missing:

  • Check if the display has been inverted. Refer to the operations manual.
  • Only if individual segments of the digits are missing is there an actual fault with the touchpad.

The touchpad does not respond to touch:

  • Check that the panel has not been locked.
  • Check that the temperature has not been locked.
  • Ensure the buttons are only being pressed lightly.
  • If you can't sort the problem then check topside is pugged into the circuit board correctly (turn the spa off) - if it is then, removes the decal and check the buttons - if they work replace the decal/sticker if no control call the professionals.

TouchPad Is Working But My Blower, Pump Two, Pump One High Speed, Heater Or Light Is Not?

You will have a central control box that all these components plug into. Turn Power OFF. Check to see if all the plugs are securely in place and have not vibrated loose. Plugin properly and check to see if that makes a good connection. Turn the power back ON.

How do I replace the Topside Bulb Replacement (on Balboa topsides):

Another panel problem may be burned-out backlighting bulbs. These bulbs can easily be replaced.

  • With the power off, gently pry up the topside control panel with a screwdriver. Next, locate the grey bulb holes in the back of the panel. Use a screwdriver to turn the bulb approximately 7 mm to remove and replace the bulb. (Needle-nose pliers may also be useful.)
